FORSYTHIA: Nature’s Secret Weapon to Fight Colds Naturally
Those are Forsythia plants, and they're one of my absolute favorite flowers used in Chinese Herbal Medicine.
Forsythia, known as Lian Qiao, is a chief ingredient in cold-fighting formulas. It's commonly found in over-the-counter remedies that help boost the immune system.
But here comes the lesson of the week - according to acupuncture theory, there are two types of colds:
The Hot Type: This is where you feel like you’re running a fever (even if you aren't), or that you’re overheated. You may have a scratchy throat and feel extra thirsty.
The Cold Type: With a cold invasion, you’ll feel like you can’t warm up. You may be achy and have a headache.
Forsythia is best used for the Hot Type. This means if you’re using a supplement that contains this immune-boosting herb, you should not be taking it if you’re feeling more chilled than hot. This is a common mistake that can actually cause a cold to get worse, which is the opposite of what you’re trying to accomplish.
One last thing - Chinese Herbal Formulas are balanced, processed, and contain several different herbs. Which means you shouldn’t go out into your yard, pick some Forsythia, and eat it. Okay?
P.S. - If you want to deal with the Cold Type, make some ginger tea. If you’d like the recipe, just comment below.
