Resolution Reboot

There are still 8 months left in this year. Let’s do this.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to late December 2021. Remember the you from back then? The one who wanted to accomplish big things in 2022? Think back, what were your resolutions? Maybe you wanted to:

  • Live Healthier

  • Start a Business

  • Get Happy

  • Run a Race

  • Change Careers

Then somewhere by early February it all kind of fell apart. That’s okay because today we’re going to get you back on track. But first, let’s take a moment to make sure you actually WANT to realize this resolution. If you’re unsure, read this blog about the Should/Shame spiral.

Okay, now that we know you actually want to accomplish this we’re going to start very slowly. I know, nobody likes starting slow. We prefer to go in guns blazing, except that isn’t sustainable in the long run. If it was, you wouldn’t have quit. The all or nothing approach is how dreams die.

Reaching goals is all about the consistent effort that we put in over time.

There is no movie montage to skip this part. It’s just keeping at it until you become the person who does whatever it is you’re trying to do. For example, say the goal is to “live healthier”. You want to explore this and make sure your goal is VERY clear so that you know if you’re making progress towards it. So instead of “live healthier” it would look something like “walking for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week”.

Now this is the part that is crucial, DO NOT try to start at the end goal. Right now you're not the person who walks 5 days a week. You have to look at where you’re starting and come up with an intermediate goal. Are you currently the person who never walks? Then your starting point may look like “10 minutes a day for 3 days a week I will go for a walk”, it may even look like “I found sneakers, put them on and walked to the mailbox”. It’s really important to examine where you are and use that as the place you start.

the starting place should feel easy and achievable.

Next, you practice this intermediate goal until this is part of your life. You are now the person who walks 10 minutes a day, 3 days a week. And you increase the goal to the next intermediate step. You do this until this step is just a natural part of who you are. Then you move up again.

This is how we achieve goals.

Taking on big challenges can be daunting. You don’t have to do it alone.
