Set Goals Differently this year
I don’t know about the rest of you but my social media has been flooded with weight loss, exercise and organizational ads all aimed at the “New Year, New You”. It’s making me a bit crazy and I wanted to pop on today and explain why. You see the entire premise that you need a “New You” rests on the idea that there’s something wrong with the current you. That you aren’t a whole person who has value and self worth for being the person who you currently are.
That’s messed up for so many reasons. The simplest is that it’s completely counterproductive. For instance, many people make a New Year's resolution to lose weight. They approach the entire thing from currently hating the body they’re in. They don’t like how it looks and want it to be different.
Now why on earth would you want to take care of something you don’t like? Sure we may begrudgingly do it but it won’t be with ease and it won’t feel good. We’d also miss the transformation of becoming the person who enjoys eating a wider variety of foods or adding movement to our daily routines.
Instead we white knuckle our way through the process, waiting for the day the scale ticks down to some arbitrary number we’ve decided ahead of time so that we can FINALLY feel good about ourselves. What if we could go about this process differently? What if our goals were from a place of growth? A place where we wanted to stretch our possibilities instead of changing something “wrong” about ourselves. Wouldn’t it be easier to work at something that inspired you vs something you didn’t like?
