3 Reasons Why Your Goal-Setting Method is Holding You Back

Spoiler Alert

The reason why you’ve failed at something isn’t because you're lazy or undisciplined.

I know, I know. You're probably thinking, "But April, I am lazy and undisciplined." But trust me, that's not the reason why you aren’t reaching your goals.

Instead, it’s probably one of these reasons:

1- Changing too much at once.

If you try to completely change your diet, while adding in 45 minutes of exercise a day and getting to bed early - you’ll end up completely overwhelmed and crashing by day 4.

Take smaller steps. Just like we talked about here, pick one thing and start at 5 minutes a day. Trust me.

2- Picking a Goal That's Too Big

Imagine wanting to run a 5K, but you can't even run around the block yet. It’s easy to fizzle out on training when you're gasping for breath halfway through your run.

Instead, think of the progress like a ladder where the top rung is the 5k, but the bottom rung might be running around the block.

You start at the bottom rung and do that, until it becomes second nature. And then you move up another rung and set the distance a bit longer.

You continue to celebrate while moving up the rungs toward your ultimate goal.

3- Not Knowing Why You Want the Goal

Imagine you have a treasure map, but you don't know what the treasure is or why you want it. Goals can be like that too. If we set a goal without understanding why it's important to us, it might lose its sparkle along the way.

This is why most of my coaching sessions start with finding out your why.

Take some time to think about why your goal matters to you. The why is what motivates us and keeps us going.

Which means the reason shouldn’t come from something you don’t like about yourself, such as  “I need to lose weight because I hate the way I look”.

Because motivation from a place of shame is a hard thing to sustain. By focusing on all the things you don’t like about yourself, you’re increasing your stress. And stressed out people rarely make good decisions.

Instead, pick a reason that motivates & encourages you.

So, if you're feeling stuck and frustrated, don't beat yourself up. It's not you, it's your method. But the good news is, now you can take a different path and arrive at a more successful outcome
