Need a Resolution Rescue?

Resolution starting to fizzle out?

Let me start by saying this loud and clear - it isn’t because you lack willpower.

You aren’t lazy either.

Okay? Now that we’ve got that out of the way let’s figure out what’s actually going on.

  1. Do you know your why? Ambivalence has no place here. Forget the "shoulds" and "ought to’s" – this needs to come from a deeply personal place.

Consider this: Let’s say your resolution is to walk more. Will “I should” coax you out of your warm bed to get up early and walk? Sure, it might do the trick momentarily, perhaps for a day or two. But can it sustain that motivation day after day?

Instead, find your why & write it down every morning. This way, you’ll keep that initial spark alive, reminding yourself why you embarked on this journey in the first place.

  2. Are the goals realistic? If you can’t squeeze in a 10-minute walk now, committing to the gym five days a week is setting yourself up for frustration.

You’re totally capable of becoming that daily workout enthusiast, but it’s a journey, not a teleportation. Start small and build up.

Think of this as the compound interest of resolutions. A little bit adds up over time.

  3. Do you have a plan for failure? I'm throwing quotes around "failure" because it's a subjective term, but it's what most people tend to label it.

Before you even begin whatever it is you’ve resolved to do, record any pitfalls you foresee being a problem. Once you’ve done this write down what you’ll do to overcome the issues on the list.

For example: If the goal is to walk outside every morning and the weather makes that difficult - write down your alternative plan. It makes pivoting easier.

But let’s be realistic, okay? You all have busy lives. Things happen. If the situation is rare, shrug it off. The goal isn’t flawless execution; it’s consistency.

Saying it louder for the folks in the back: Consistency beats Perfection every time

There you have it, my friends! Remember, those early flutters of new year's motivation rarely translate into lasting change without some conscious effort. Find your "why," set realistic goals, plan for pitfalls, and embrace the power of small, consistent steps. You've got this!
