Can We Always Be Happy?

It’s not healthy

to be happy all of the time

I know, trust me I get it, but it’s true. I’m an acupuncturist and a life coach - and both of these professions agree on this statement. There is no avoiding it, but understanding why may make it easier.  Lucky for you, I love to geek out on this type of stuff so without further ado...

First up, the Acupuncture Reason:

Acupuncture theory has 5 major emotions; joy, anger, sadness, worry and fear. And as much as most of us would like to skip over some of these, that isn’t how it works. In order to be in balance you need to feel ALL of the emotions. Which means that the scale shouldn’t be dominated by any of them.

In fact, one of the biggest sources of pain (both physical and emotional) stems from being stuck in one or two emotions on the list. It causes an energetic traffic jam, so to speak. The job of the acupuncturist is to get things running smoothly again so that you feel a range of emotions.

That’s easier said than done because sometimes we get really attached to one emotion. Which is actually how I ended up being a coach, to help my clients get unstuck and moving again.

The Coaching Reason….

Coaching also teaches us to feel all of our emotions. Because when we avoid our feelings we actually end up prolonging our suffering. I’ll give an example from my own life to help make this clear.

When my oldest child took their first solo drive it brought up lots of feelings of nostalgia (as well as anxiety because they were driving!!). It wasn’t that long ago when my kids would rush to the door to greet me as excited as a puppy does, yet somehow we were at driving age. But instead of taking a moment to feel what I was experiencing, I shoved it way down deep.

Three days later I found myself in the hallway sobbing because I couldn’t find a shoe.

Clearly it wasn’t about the shoe. Days prior if I had taken a moment to just feel my feelings, they wouldn’t have pressurized and come up in such a dramatic way.

Which is why I’ve made you a little movie in honor of “National Tell a Fairy Tale Day”.

Because always being happy is not only unhealthy, it’s an unrealistic fairy tale.
