Spring Irritability and How to Deal With It

If you live in a part of the world that’s about to enter spring, you’ll want to keep reading.

When I started practicing acupuncture nearly 20 years ago I noticed that the months of February - April were rough for my female patients. Irritability, agitation and indecision ran rampant, along with physical symptoms such as pain flares, PMS and seasonal allergies. It was so common that I often joked that I should run a seminar titled “It’s March and This Explains Why You Want a Divorce”.

This sudden desire to divorce puzzled me so I dug deep into acupuncture theory for an answer. I learned that there was a very real clinical reason for the aforementioned. We’ve discussed it at length in other blogs, but at its core it usually boils down to this:

Repressed Emotions

For example, a long time patient came into the office (in March) declaring that she wanted a divorce. The reason she gave was that she was absolutely SICK of her husband's inconsideration in not putting his shoes away. Shoes. This was the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back on a 12 year marriage.

What really happened? She had been shoving down minor issues, both related and not related to her shoe-strewing husband, for a long time. When all of the momentum of spring energy hit, things no longer stayed stuck. This is a clear example of Liver Qi energy out of balance.

Think of this like a closet you shove all your things into. Eventually you can’t fit any more stuff in there and the door bursts open and all the bits and pieces you heaped in there spills out.

Nobody wants that.

Instead, we want this energy in balance. Because in harmony you will have the clarity to make clear goals and the courage to enact them. So how does that happen?

Get perspective.

Usually our problems are not what we think they are (remember the shoes?). Hiring a coach to help you sort through things will help you figure out what your issue is, and solve it.

A coach is like an organizational expert for your brain.

We work with you to clear out the clutter in your brain so that there is room to think. There is no need to spend your Spring miserable.
